Full Summary reader response Draft 2: Five years since Paris Agreement, world must get ambitious on climate action

In the recent news release, “Five years since Paris Agreement, world must get ambitious on climate action”, Sharma (2020) addressed the world’s efforts to combat climate change by holding a global Climate Ambition Summit to discuss strategies for carbon neutrality. During the summit, 45 nationally determined contributions (NDC) and 24 net-zero commitments have been announced by leaders worldwide to reduce the impacts of climate change. Sharma stated that the British government has withdrawn its monetary support for the fossil fuel energy sector overseas. Additionally, he mentioned the United Kingdom’s (UK) and Singapore’s government exchange on educating each other regarding grid decarbonisation. He claims that Singapore plays a vital role in supporting regional energy transitions, keen on imparting its knowledge for a sustainable planet. Thus, he believes that contribution is not an individual effort, and it is proven by our existing pandemic to work together and achieve success.

The article suggested that to combat climate change the world has to work hand in hand, forming partnership to achieve success. Likewise, In my opinion, I agree that collaboration to share information between the world is essential to combat climate change.

One example would be developing countries lacks the knowledge and resources to implement strategies to combat climate change as seen in many articles I have researched on, quoting from Javadinejad et al (2019) "Poor developing countries release 63% of the global greenhouse gas emissions” this indicates if developing countries gain more access to technologies and information to reduce the Greenhouse gas emission, the global emission will be reduced by a huge percentage. Javadinejad et al stated that research has shown that one of the common problems in developing countries is the lack of funding for their adaption plans so if the developing countries are able to acquire more monetary resource and knowledge through collaboration with developed countries, they will be able to effectively combat climate change.

In another article, the collaboration of the world to develop climate-friendly technology (CFT) is one of the main key notions to combat climate change stated (Jiang et al, 2017).During 2015 Paris climate summit 20 countries agreed to work together and share information on CFT research and development activities called Mission Innovation and through these activities, the countries more knowledgeable on low-carbon science technology can connect to other countries sharing the in order for them to catch up with each other. Furthermore, the countries can share with each other their grey areas of such technologies and improve it hence accelerating CFT in the market decreasing the emission of greenhouse gases reducing the impact on climate change.

One article that caught my eye was made by Burton (2016) Stating that collaboration is essential to fight against climate change as it helps expedite the solution to the problem of climate change as time is short on our hands and the collaboration of different level is able to greatly assist with the solution examples collaboration between the sector of business to collaboration between nations and organisations. The importance of collaboration can assist different organisations to reach their target outcomes by allowing funding, sharing knowledge and expertise, and facilitating partnerships in implementation, monitoring and evaluation. All these will help the world learn what’s making a positive impact and what’s not thus increasing the world’s ability to protect itself from climate change.

In conclusion, I believe that collaboration between the nations, organisations and people is essential to protect our world from climate change. Especially to countries that are lagging in term of technologies and knowledge if more countries work together and build on each other successes, it is certain that climate change would be a thing of the past.
